Whiskey and Coke

Whiskey and Coke

go together

like me having no trust in you

when you're drinking.

The carbonation burns my throat

more than the alcohol.

Whiskey and Coke

compliment one another

like how I waste my Friday nights

waiting for you to call

while you fall asleep tucked under a blanket.

The fire tastes fresh on your tongue

just like your social status burns holes in your jeans

right in the pocket where your cell phone hides

flashing my name on the screen.

Whiskey and Coke

are a perfect match

like how you can be hurt from your past

but I can't be hurt from ours.

Last night,

I hoped that you would yearn for me

enough to skip

     that drink

and reach for the promise you made instead.
